A gallon is not one universal size. One US liquid gallon equals exactly 3.785411784 litres, while one Imperial gallon equals exactly 4.54609 litres.

That means 1 litre is approximately 0.264172 US gallon or 0.219969 Imperial gallon. When gallons are selected, the converter shows both systems so the difference is visible instead of hiding it behind a generic gal label.

Fluid ounces, pints, quarts, and gallons exist in both US customary and Imperial systems, but units with the same name do not necessarily hold the same volume.

The Imperial gallon, pint, and quart are larger than their US liquid counterparts. The Imperial fluid ounce is slightly smaller than a US fluid ounce. Always keep the system label attached to a converted value.

Metric volume conversion is straightforward: one litre equals exactly 1,000 millilitres, and one millilitre equals one cubic centimetre.

One cubic metre contains exactly 1,000 litres. So 0.25 litre is 250 mL, 2.5 litres is 2,500 mL, and 0.5 cubic metre is 500 litres.

Kitchen volume units need their measurement system identified. The US customary cup in this converter equals exactly eight US fluid ounces, or 236.5882365 mL.

A metric cup is different at 250 mL. Some recipes use a rounded value near 240 mL for a US-style cup, so the recipe's stated measurement system should take priority when precision matters.

In US customary liquid measure, one quart contains exactly four US cups. It also equals two US pints or 32 US fluid ounces.

That relationship applies to the US liquid system. An Imperial quart is a different volume and should not be treated as four US cups.

Millilitres, litres, cups, and gallons measure volume. Grams, kilograms, ounces of mass, and pounds measure mass.

A volume cannot be converted directly to grams or kilograms without knowing the density of the material. One cup of water, flour, oil, and honey does not have the same mass even when the volume is identical.

A fluid ounce is a unit of volume. An avoirdupois ounce is a unit of mass. They share the word ounce but measure different physical quantities.

Use US fl oz or Imperial fl oz when converting liquid volume. Use the Weight Converter when the source value is an ounce of mass.

The converter uses the defined relationships between supported units without first shortening intermediate values. Decimal results are then formatted for readability.

An exact conversion factor does not make the original measurement exact. Measuring-cup markings, container calibration, temperature, and reading technique can still affect the practical accuracy of a volume measurement.
