Why Are US and UK Gallons Different?

A US gallon and an Imperial gallon are not the same size. Here's why America kept the older gallon while Britain replaced its own in 1824.

A gallon isn't always the same size

A gallon sounds like a fixed amount. It isn't.

A US gallon contains 3.785 litres. An Imperial gallon, traditionally used in the UK, contains 4.546 litres about 20% more. The difference is large enough to affect recipes, fuel economy and everyday conversions.

The reason is not that the United States invented a different gallon. America kept an older English measure while Britain replaced its own.

The gallon was once a mess

Before modern standards, “a gallon” did not necessarily describe one precise volume.

Historical records show competing gallon standards of different sizes, including wine, beer, ale and dry measures. A U.S. government report from the early republic listed gallon standards ranging from 224 to 282 cubic inches and noted that the measures had no determinate capacity.

One of those measures was the 231-cubic-inch wine gallon. That number would eventually become the American gallon.

America kept the 231-cubic-inch gallon

The 231-cubic-inch wine gallon had already been in long use in the American colonies. After independence, the United States continued using it rather than replacing it with a new national gallon.

That gives us today's US gallon: 231 cubic inches, or 3.785412 litres.

The modern U.S. gallon is still defined as exactly 231 cubic inches.

Britain decided to standardize the gallon

In 1824, Britain passed the Weights and Measures Act, replacing its collection of competing capacity standards with a new Imperial standard.

The law specified that the Imperial gallon would contain 10 avoirdupois pounds of distilled water, measured at 62°F with the barometer at 30 inches. The quart was defined as one-quarter of a gallon and the pint as one-eighth.

The resulting Imperial gallon was about 277.42 cubic inches, or 4.54609 litres.

Britain had not simply made its old gallon bigger. It had established a new standard with a precisely specified physical reference.

That's where the two gallons split

The difference can be reduced to two numbers: 231 cubic inches for the US gallon and about 277.42 cubic inches for the Imperial gallon.

An Imperial gallon is about 20.1% larger than a US gallon. The difference carries through to the smaller units as well.

The strange case of the fluid ounce

You might expect the larger gallon to contain larger ounces. It doesn't.

A US gallon contains 128 US fluid ounces. An Imperial gallon contains 160 Imperial fluid ounces.

That means a US fluid ounce is about 29.573 mL, while an Imperial fluid ounce is about 28.413 mL.

So the Imperial gallon is larger, but the Imperial fluid ounce is smaller.

The same pattern appears with pints and quarts. The units share names, but they do not necessarily share sizes.

Why does this still matter?

For most people, the difference becomes noticeable when a measurement crosses systems.

Recipes are a common example. A recipe calling for a gallon of liquid means different amounts depending on which measurement system it uses.

Fuel is another. A car rated at 40 miles per US gallon is not achieving the same fuel economy as one rated at 40 miles per Imperial gallon, because the Imperial gallon is larger.

This is one reason international specifications often use litres per 100 kilometres instead. A metric measurement avoids the ambiguity entirely.

It is also why a conversion tool should never treat “gallon” as a complete unit name without knowing which gallon you mean.

So which gallon is the real gallon?

Both.

A US gallon is a defined unit of volume based on 231 cubic inches. An Imperial gallon is a different defined unit based on the British standard established in the 19th century. Neither is a mistake or a wrong version.

They are two surviving branches of an older measurement system that developed differently. The United States kept one historical standard. Britain replaced its collection of older standards with another.

The result is a small linguistic trap that has survived for two centuries: a gallon is not always a gallon.

If you're converting between them, identify the system first. Otherwise, a perfectly accurate conversion can still give you the wrong answer.
