Nether Portal Coordinate Calculator

Plan linked Minecraft portals with exact and build-ready X, Y, and Z coordinates in either direction, using the Nether's 1:8 horizontal scale.

How Nether coordinates scale

Minecraft compresses horizontal distance in the Nether. Divide Overworld X and Z by eight to find the corresponding Nether position; multiply Nether X and Z by eight for the Overworld.

The Y coordinate is not scaled. Matching the calculated X and Z closely helps, but nearby portals and vertical distance can affect which portal links.

Negative-coordinate rounding

For Overworld-to-Nether conversion, Minecraft floors the divided coordinate. Floor rounding moves toward negative infinity, so −1 divided by 8 becomes a build coordinate of −1 rather than 0.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I divide the Y coordinate by eight?

No. Only X and Z are scaled between the Overworld and Nether.

Why did my portal link somewhere else?

The game searches for nearby destination portals. Existing portals, height, terrain, edition, and version can affect the selected link.
