Overworld to Nether Coordinate Conversion

To convert an Overworld position to the Nether, divide X and Z by eight. An Overworld portal at X 800 and Z −400 therefore corresponds to Nether X 100 and Z −50.

The conversion is applied independently to both horizontal axes. Coordinates are not rotated, swapped, or forced to become positive.

Y represents vertical height and is not divided by eight. It remains part of the destination target because height can still matter when Minecraft chooses between nearby portals.

Nether to Overworld Coordinate Conversion

To convert a Nether position to the Overworld, multiply X and Z by eight. A Nether portal at X 125 and Z −50 corresponds to Overworld X 1,000 and Z −400.

This horizontal compression is why Nether hubs and highways are effective for long-distance travel. Moving 100 blocks along X or Z in the Nether represents 800 horizontal blocks in the Overworld.

Y remains unchanged by the formula, although the terrain and valid portal placement at the destination may require building at a different height.

Exact Coordinates and Whole-Block Coordinates

The exact result is the direct mathematical conversion. For example, Overworld X 101 divided by eight gives Nether X 12.625.

The whole-block result identifies the Minecraft block containing that exact position. The calculator uses floor rounding rather than ordinary decimal rounding or truncation.

Use the exact values when checking the conversion. Use the whole-block result as the practical starting position for locating or constructing a portal frame.

Correct Rounding for Negative Coordinates

Negative decimal coordinates must be floored toward negative infinity. This is especially important for Overworld coordinates between −1 and −7 because dividing them by eight produces a negative fraction between −1 and 0.

For example, Overworld X −1 converts exactly to Nether X −0.125. The whole-block result is X −1 because −0.125 lies inside block −1.

Truncating −0.125 to zero would point to a different block. The calculator therefore uses the same floor-based block convention for positive and negative decimal coordinates.

Why Y Is Not Scaled but Still Matters

The 1:8 relationship applies only to horizontal X and Z distance. The calculator carries Y into the destination without dividing or multiplying it.

Minecraft may still consider vertical distance when comparing possible destination portals. Two portals near the same converted X and Z position can behave differently if their Y coordinates are far apart.

The ideal Y coordinate may also be obstructed, outside a practical construction area, over lava, inside terrain, or otherwise unsuitable for a portal frame.

How Minecraft Portal Linking Works

Nether portals are not permanently stored as fixed pairs. When something travels through a portal, Minecraft converts the entry position and looks for a suitable active portal near the destination.

If an eligible portal is found, the game can use that existing frame instead of creating a new one. If no suitable portal is available, it attempts to generate a portal near the converted position.

This means the mathematically correct destination may still link to a different frame when several portals exist nearby or when the ideal location cannot safely contain a portal.

How to Create a More Reliable Portal Pair

Record coordinates at the actual portal rather than at a nearby base, storage room, road, or marker. Even a small difference is multiplied when converting from the Nether to the Overworld.

Build or locate the second portal as close as practical to the displayed whole-block coordinates. Matching the Y level is useful when several portals compete for the same converted horizontal area.

Light both frames and test travel in both directions. A route that reaches the intended destination in one direction can still return through a different portal if that frame is closer to the reverse-converted target.

Troubleshooting Portals That Link Incorrectly

Check for other active portals near the calculated destination, including frames above or below the intended portal. Old automatically generated portals are a common source of unexpected links.

Compare the coordinates of every competing portal after converting them into the same dimension. Horizontal distance is important, but a large Y difference can also affect the preferred destination.

When necessary, move the intended frame closer to the ideal target, disable competing portals temporarily, and test the route again from both dimensions.

What This Calculator Cannot Predict

The calculator accurately performs the coordinate conversion and whole-block flooring used by its displayed model.

It cannot detect portals already present in your world, inspect terrain, find safe construction space, or reproduce every portal-search decision made by Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, servers, plugins, or mods.
