Minecraft Stack and Storage Calculator
Calculate Minecraft full stacks, loose items, occupied slots, shulker boxes, chests, and inventory loads for items that stack to 64, 16, 1, or a custom size. Reverse stacks into a total item count, compare container requirements, or calculate how many items fit in a chosen storage setup after reserving slots.
Items, stacks, and storage
Convert items into stacks and containers, convert stacks back into items, or calculate a storage setup's maximum capacity.
Use 64 for most blocks and items, 16 for items such as ender pearls or snowballs, and 1 for non-stackable items.

Storage assumptions
The calculation assumes every item follows the same maximum stack size. For mixed materials, calculate each item type separately and add the occupied slots rather than combining raw item totals.
A shulker box, single chest, barrel, and ender chest each provide 27 slots. A double chest provides 54. The player-load figure uses the 27 main-storage slots plus the 9-slot hotbar; armor and offhand are excluded.
Nested portable storage is not included. Shulker boxes may be stored in chests or ender chests, but vanilla Minecraft does not allow a shulker box inside another shulker box.
Convert Items Into Stacks and Storage
Enter the total number of one item and select its maximum stack size. The calculator separates the quantity into completely filled stacks and the loose items remaining in the final partial stack.
It also counts the inventory slots occupied and compares the number of shulker boxes, single chests, barrels, ender chests, double chests, and 36-slot player inventory loads required.
The final-container detail shows how many items and slots are used in the last partially filled container, which is more useful for packing than a rounded decimal number of chests.
Convert Stacks and Loose Items Back Into a Total
When a material list says something such as 5 stacks plus 32 blocks, choose the reverse mode and enter both parts. The calculator multiplies the full stacks by the selected stack size and adds the loose items.
Loose items must be smaller than one complete stack. If the selected maximum is 64, entering 64 loose items would actually be one additional full stack and should be entered that way.
The converted total receives the same storage comparison as a directly entered item count, so a build list can move immediately from stack notation to shulker and chest planning.
Minecraft Stack Sizes Are Not Always 64
Most blocks and many ordinary items use a maximum stack size of 64, but that rule is not universal.
Some vanilla items use stacks of 16, including examples such as ender pearls, snowballs, eggs, and empty buckets. Tools, weapons, armor, filled shulker boxes, and many other stateful or durable items are normally non-stackable and use one slot each.
Always use the maximum shown by the actual item. Two quantities with the same item count can require very different storage when one stacks to 64 and the other stacks to 16 or 1.
Calculate How Many Items Fit in Your Storage
The storage-capacity mode works in the opposite direction. Choose a container, enter how many you have, select the item stack size, and the calculator returns the maximum number of that item the setup can hold.
Reserved slots can be subtracted from every container for tools, food, rockets, labels, filters, or other materials. This avoids claiming that a survival inventory has full theoretical capacity when some slots must remain available.
A custom container option is included for server plugins, mods, add-ons, or storage systems with a different slot count.
Shulker Boxes, Chests, Barrels, and Ender Chests
A shulker box has 27 slots, so it holds 27 stacks. At a stack size of 64, that is 1,728 items. At a stack size of 16, it is 432 items. For non-stackable items, it holds 27.
A single chest, barrel, and ender chest also provide 27 slots. A double chest combines two chest inventories for 54 slots, equal to 3,456 ordinary 64-stack items when completely filled.
These containers have the same raw slot arithmetic but different in-game behaviour. Shulker boxes retain their contents when broken, ender chests expose player-specific shared storage, and barrels or chests are stationary storage blocks.
A Partial Stack Still Uses a Complete Slot
A slot holds one stack, whether that stack contains its maximum or only one item. This is why occupied slots use ceiling division rather than ordinary rounding.
For example, 65 blocks with a stack size of 64 form one full stack and one loose block. They occupy two slots even though the second slot is almost empty.
Container requirements are calculated from occupied slots, so any final partial stack is given the full slot it needs.
Player Inventory Capacity
The standard player-load result uses the 27 main inventory slots plus the 9-slot hotbar, for 36 ordinary storage slots.
Armor slots and the offhand are not included because they do not behave as general-purpose storage for an arbitrary material. The crafting grid is also excluded.
In real survival travel, reserve space for tools, food, rockets, blocks used for access, drops collected on the journey, and the shulker boxes themselves. Use the capacity mode's reserved-slot field to model that reduced carrying space.
Nested Shulker Storage Is Deliberately Excluded
Filled shulker boxes can be carried in player inventories and stored in ordinary chests or ender chests, greatly increasing portable capacity.
However, vanilla Minecraft does not allow a shulker box to be stored inside another shulker box. Treating all containers as recursively nestable would therefore produce impossible totals.
This calculator reports direct item storage only. To plan an ender chest filled with shulker boxes, first calculate the item capacity of one shulker and then multiply by the number of shulkers you intend to carry.
Mixed Material Lists Need Slot-by-Slot Planning
Different item types cannot normally share one stack merely because they have the same maximum size. Thirty-two stone and thirty-two dirt occupy two separate slots, not one combined 64-item stack.
For a mixed build list, calculate each item type separately and add the occupied-slot results. Adding all raw items before dividing by 64 can underestimate storage.
Items with different stack limits must also be calculated separately. A list containing blocks, ender pearls, tools, and filled buckets cannot be represented by one shared stack size.
Custom Stack Sizes and Version Context
The preset values cover normal vanilla use: 64, 16, and 1. A custom field is available for Java item components, data packs, commands, server systems, or mods.
Current Java Edition's max_stack_size item component supports values up to 99. That does not mean ordinary vanilla items automatically stack to 99, and Bedrock add-ons or third-party mods may follow different limits.
Use a custom value only when the world or server actually changes the item's maximum stack size.
Minecraft stack and storage formulas
Full stacks use floor division, loose items use the division remainder, and occupied slots or required containers use ceiling division because a partial stack still occupies a slot.

Examples
Large building-block order
1Input
12,345 items; maximum stack size 64.
Show result
Result
192 full stacks and 57 loose items, occupying 193 slots. The material requires 8 shulker boxes or 4 double chests.
Seven shulker boxes are completely filled. The eighth contains 249 items across four slots.
Convert stack notation into items
2Input
5 full stacks and 32 loose blocks; maximum stack size 64.
Show result
Result
352 total blocks occupying 6 slots.
The partial stack of 32 still uses one complete inventory slot.
Ender pearls in shulker boxes
3Input
1,000 ender pearls; maximum stack size 16.
Show result
Result
62 full stacks and 8 loose pearls, occupying 63 slots. Three shulker boxes are required.
Using a stack size of 64 would incorrectly underestimate the storage.
Non-stackable tools
4Input
80 tools; maximum stack size 1.
Show result
Result
80 occupied slots, requiring 3 shulker boxes or 2 double chests.
Every tool occupies its own slot.
Storage capacity with reserved space
5Input
3 shulker boxes; stack size 64; 2 reserved slots in each box.
Show result
Result
75 usable slots with a maximum capacity of 4,800 items.
Six of the 81 total slots remain reserved.
Empty item total
6Input
0 items; maximum stack size 64.
Show result
Result
0 stacks, 0 occupied slots, and 0 containers required.
The calculator handles zero without inventing a partial stack or container.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many items are in one Minecraft stack?
Most blocks and items stack to 64, but some stack to 16 and non-stackable items use one item per slot.
How many stacks are 1,000 blocks?
At 64 blocks per stack, 1,000 blocks are 15 full stacks plus 40 blocks and occupy 16 slots.
How many items fit in a shulker box?
A shulker box has 27 slots. It holds 1,728 items at stack size 64, 432 at stack size 16, or 27 non-stackable items.
How many stacks fit in a shulker box?
Twenty-seven stacks fit in one shulker box.
How many items fit in a double chest?
A double chest has 54 slots. It holds 3,456 items at stack size 64 or 864 items at stack size 16.
How many slots are in the player inventory?
The main inventory has 27 storage slots and the hotbar has 9, giving 36 general item slots. Armor and offhand are separate and excluded here.
Why does one loose item require another slot?
A slot can hold only one stack of one item type. A partial stack occupies the slot even when it contains only one item.
Can I add different item types together before calculating?
No. Different item types occupy separate stacks. Calculate each material separately and add their occupied slots.
Can shulker boxes be placed inside other shulker boxes?
No. Vanilla Minecraft prevents shulker boxes from being stored inside another shulker box.
Can shulker boxes be stored in an ender chest?
Yes. Shulker boxes can occupy the ender chest's 27 slots, but this calculator excludes that nested-storage arrangement from its direct container totals.
What should I enter for tools and armor?
Use a maximum stack size of 1 unless the specific world, server, command, or mod changes that item.
Why is there a custom stack size up to 99?
Current Java Edition supports a max_stack_size item component up to 99 for customised items. Normal vanilla items still use their ordinary limits.
Are a barrel and single chest the same capacity?
Yes. Both have 27 storage slots, although their placement and interaction behaviour differ.
Does the storage-capacity mode account for tools and food?
Only when you reserve slots for them. Enter the number of slots in each container that should remain unavailable for the calculated item.
