Grade Calculator

Enter assignment scores and course weights to calculate your current weighted grade. You can also enter your current grade, desired grade, and final exam weight to find the score needed on the final.

Enter the course weight for each completed item or category. If the weights total less than 100%, the remaining course weight is not counted as zero.

This is your grade across the course weight entered so far. Unentered course weight is not treated as zero.

How to Use the Grade Calculator

Choose Current grade to calculate your performance from completed assignments, exams, projects, or other graded items. Enter the score earned, the possible score, and the percentage of the course each item represents.

Choose Final needed when you already know your current course grade and want to find the score required on the final exam to finish with a particular overall grade.

The two modes solve different problems, so you do not need to enter assignment rows when you only want to calculate a final-exam target.

How a Weighted Grade Is Calculated

Each graded item is first converted to a percentage by dividing the score earned by the possible score. That percentage is then multiplied by the item's course weight.

For example, scoring 80 out of 100 on an assignment worth 20% of the course contributes 16 percentage points toward the overall course grade.

The contributions from all entered items are added together. When the entered weights total less than 100%, the calculator reports your grade across the completed weight rather than treating the unfinished part of the course as zero.

Why the Entered Weight Matters

Course weights determine how strongly each item affects your grade. A final exam worth 40% of a course has much more influence than a quiz worth 5%.

If the items entered total 50% of the course, a current grade of 90% means you have earned 45 percentage points out of that completed 50%. It does not mean you currently have 45% in the course.

This distinction is useful when part of the course has not yet been graded.

How to Calculate the Grade Needed on a Final

Final-needed mode assumes your current grade applies to the portion of the course that is not the final exam.

The calculator combines that current coursework grade with the final-exam weight and solves for the final score required to reach your desired overall grade.

For example, if your current grade is 80%, your target is 85%, and the final is worth 20%, you would need 105% on the final. On a standard exam capped at 100%, that target is not reachable.

When a Target Is Already Secured

Sometimes your existing coursework is strong enough that even a score of 0% on the final would still leave you at or above your desired overall grade.

In that case, the calculator reports 0% required and marks the target as already secured.

This does not necessarily mean the final can be skipped. Attendance, minimum-exam, or course-completion rules may still apply.

When the Required Final Grade Is Above 100%

A required score above 100% means the desired overall grade cannot be reached under the entered assumptions if the final exam has a standard maximum score of 100%.

Extra credit or a different grading policy could change that in a real course, but this calculator does not assume extra-credit points.

Points vs Course Weight

The score and possible-score fields describe performance on an item. The weight field describes how much that item contributes to the course.

An exam scored out of 200 points is not automatically twice as important as an assignment scored out of 100. If both are worth 20% of the course, they contribute equally to the weighted grade.

Use the official percentages from your syllabus when the course uses weighted categories or assignments.

Letter Grades

For convenience, the calculator labels a current percentage using a common scale: A at 90% or higher, B at 80% or higher, C at 70% or higher, D at 60% or higher, and F below 60%.

These cutoffs are not universal. Some schools use plus and minus grades, different percentage boundaries, rounding policies, curves, or other grading systems.

Use the numeric percentage as the primary result and check your course syllabus for the official letter-grade rules.

Grade Calculator Formulas

Weighted grades combine each item's percentage score with its course weight. Final-needed mode solves the overall-grade equation for the required final exam score.

Examples

Weighted current grade

80/100 worth 20%, and 45/50 worth 30%

86.00% across the 50% of course weight entered.

Perfect scores with partial course weight

100/100 worth 25%, and 50/50 worth 25%

100.00% current grade across 50% of the course.

Final exam target

Current grade 80%, desired grade 85%, final worth 20%

105.00% needed on the final.

Reachable final target

Current grade 90%, desired grade 92%, final worth 25%

98.00% needed on the final.

Target already secured

Current grade 95%, desired grade 70%, final worth 20%

0.00% required; the target is already secured.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my current grade?

Enter each completed item's score, possible score, and course weight. The calculator converts each score to a percentage, applies its weight, and combines the entered items.

How do I calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each item's percentage score by its course weight, add the weighted contributions, and divide by the total weight represented by the entered items.

What grade do I need on my final?

Choose Final needed, then enter your current course grade, desired overall grade, and the percentage of the course represented by the final exam.

Why does my current grade stay high when the weights total less than 100%?

The calculator reports your grade across the course weight entered so far. Unentered or unfinished course weight is not automatically treated as a zero.

What does weighted contribution mean?

It is the number of percentage points an item contributes toward the complete course grade. An 80% score on an item worth 20% contributes 16 percentage points.

Can the total weight be less than 100%?

Yes. This is useful for calculating your current performance while part of the course is still unfinished.

Can the total entered weight exceed 100%?

No. The calculator limits the combined entered course weight to 100%.

What if I need more than 100% on the final?

The desired grade is not reachable under the entered values on a standard exam capped at 100%. Extra-credit policies may differ, but they are not assumed here.

What does target already secured mean?

It means a 0% score on the final would still leave your overall grade at or above the desired percentage under the entered weights.

Can I enter scores such as 45 out of 50?

Yes. The calculator converts any valid earned score and possible score into a percentage before applying the item's course weight.

Does this calculator support extra credit?

Not currently. The score for an item cannot exceed its possible score.

Is the A, B, C, D, F scale universal?

No. The displayed letter grade uses a common 90, 80, 70, and 60 percentage scale. Your school or course may use different cutoffs.

Are my grades uploaded or stored?

No. All grade calculations run locally in your browser.
