iPhone Storage Calculator
Plan an iPhone storage size from the amount you currently use and the additional storage you expect to create over time. Compare only the capacities offered for a selected current model or choose custom tiers, adjust photo and video size assumptions, include apps, files, offline downloads, system storage, and Apple Intelligence, then see projected usage, remaining space, lower-tier risk, and the smallest capacity that preserves your chosen buffer.
Start With Storage You Already Use
Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage on your current phone and enter the used amount shown near the top. That value gives the planner a stronger starting point than vague questions about whether you have many apps or photos.
Current used storage already includes iOS, apps, media, messages, files, caches, and system data. The calculator therefore takes the larger of your entered usage and the selected target-system reserve instead of adding a second full system allocation.
Add Only Future Storage
Photo and video fields describe new media you expect to create during the ownership period. App, game, message, and file fields are annual additions. Offline downloads are a fixed extra amount you expect to keep beyond what is already included in current used storage.
Every media rate remains editable. Apple publishes approximate file sizes for ProRAW and selected Final Cut Camera formats, but there is no single universal size for an ordinary iPhone photo or video because the final file depends on the scene, codec, resolution, frame rate, processing, and software version.
How the Capacity Recommendation Is Chosen
The calculator projects end-of-ownership storage, divides that amount by the usable share left after your selected free-space buffer, and chooses the smallest available capacity that meets the result. Model presets restrict the answer to the capacities Apple lists for that model; custom mode lets you compare selected common tiers.
The 10%, 15%, and 20% buffers are Olivez planning margins, not Apple requirements. A buffer does not create extra storage, but it helps reveal when a lower tier would leave little room for future updates, temporary files, larger apps, or a change in how you use the phone.
System Storage and Apple Intelligence
Apple says a standard current configuration can use approximately 12GB to 24GB, including iOS and removable Apple apps. The visible system-reserve field defaults to 24GB so the assumption is conservative and adjustable.
Apple also says on-device Apple Intelligence models use approximately 7GB and can be removed when Apple Intelligence is turned off. The calculator includes that reserve only when the option is selected.
Why iCloud Optimization Is Not a Fixed Discount
With iCloud Photos and Optimize iPhone Storage enabled, full-resolution originals can remain in iCloud while space-saving versions are kept on the phone when storage is needed. Apple does not promise that local media will always occupy a specific percentage of the original library.
For that reason, selecting Optimize iPhone Storage adds an explanatory note but does not silently reduce projected media by an invented amount. You can create a less conservative scenario by entering lower measured media-growth assumptions yourself.
iPhone Storage Planning Formulas
Media megabytes are converted using 1GB = 1,000MB. Capacity tiers are advertised decimal storage values; actual formatted space is lower.
Formula variables
- Storage currently used on the existing iPhone
- Selected target system-storage reserve
- Apple Intelligence reserve when included
- New photos per month
- Average megabytes per photo
- New video minutes per month
- Average megabytes per video minute
- Planned ownership period in years
- Apps and games added over the ownership period
- Messages and files added over the ownership period
- Additional offline downloads kept on the phone
- Selected free-space buffer as a decimal
- Available capacity tiers for the selected model or custom comparison
Examples
Four-year 256GB recommendation
Input
80GB currently used; keep the phone 4 years; 15% buffer; 300 HEIF photos per month at 3MB each; 5 minutes of 4K30 HEVC video per month at 175MB/min; 5GB/year for apps and games; 2GB/year for messages and files; 10GB extra offline downloads.
Show result
Result
Projected use: 203.2GB. Required advertised capacity with the buffer: 239.1GB. The smallest matching tier is 256GB, leaving about 52.8GB before differences between advertised and actual available storage.
The HEIF value is an editable planning estimate; the 4K30 HEVC rate uses Apple's Final Cut Camera reference of more than 175MB per minute.
Why ProRAW changes the recommendation quickly
Input
200 ProRAW 48MP photos per month at Apple's approximate 75MB each for 3 years.
Show result
Result
The new photos alone add about 540GB before videos, apps, files, starting storage, or a free-space buffer are included.
Apple says actual ProRAW file size varies with image content.
No invented iCloud reduction
Input
Optimize iPhone Storage is enabled.
Show result
Result
The calculator explains that local use may be lower, but it keeps the entered media estimate because Apple does not publish a fixed local-storage percentage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I enter total capacity or used storage?
Enter the amount currently used, not your phone's advertised capacity. Find it in Settings → General → iPhone Storage.
Does current used storage already include iOS?
Yes. That is why the calculation does not simply add the entire system reserve on top of current usage. It uses whichever is larger: current usage or the selected target system plus Apple Intelligence reserve.
Why does the calculator reserve 24GB for the system?
Apple currently says a standard configuration uses approximately 12GB to 24GB. Olivez defaults to the upper end as a visible conservative assumption, and you can change it.
How much storage does Apple Intelligence use?
Apple currently says its on-device models use approximately 7GB. The amount and requirements can change with software, language, settings, and supported features.
Are the normal photo and video sizes exact?
No. HEIF, JPEG, 1080p, and 4K60 values are editable planning estimates. ProRAW and selected Final Cut Camera presets use Apple-published approximate or minimum figures, but individual files still vary.
Does iCloud add storage to my iPhone?
No. iCloud storage and device storage are separate. Optimize iPhone Storage can manage local copies dynamically, but it does not increase the phone's built-in capacity.
Why keep free space instead of filling the phone completely?
The buffer is a planning choice that leaves room for uncertain growth, updates, temporary files, and larger-than-expected media. It is not an Apple rule or a guarantee of performance.
Can I compare an older or region-specific capacity?
Yes. Choose Custom capacities and select the tiers relevant to the phone or market you are considering.
Are my storage details uploaded?
No. The calculation runs locally in your browser.
