How to Use the Area Converter
Enter a non-negative area, select its current unit, and choose the unit you want to convert to.
Use Swap to reverse the conversion. When a valid result exists, the unrounded converted value becomes the new source value.
The input supports ordinary decimals, grouped numbers such as 10,000, and scientific notation such as 2.5e6.
How Area Unit Conversion Works
Each supported unit has a factor describing how many square metres it contains.
The source value is multiplied by its square-metres-per-unit factor and divided by the target unit's factor.
Using square metres as the common reference avoids chaining visibly rounded conversions between acres, hectares, square feet, and other units.

What Area Measures
Area measures the extent of a two-dimensional surface.
It is expressed in square units because it represents two independent dimensions, such as length multiplied by width.
Area is different from length, perimeter, and volume. A length conversion factor cannot be applied directly to an area.
Why Length Conversion Factors Are Squared
One international foot equals exactly 0.3048 metre.
A square foot is therefore a square measuring 0.3048 metre on each side.
Its area is 0.3048 × 0.3048, giving exactly 0.09290304 square metre.
The same squared-factor rule applies to square inches, square yards, square kilometres, and square miles.
Square Metres and Metric Area Units
The square metre, symbol m², is the SI-derived unit of area.
One square centimetre equals 0.0001 m², and one square millimetre equals 0.000001 m².
One square kilometre equals exactly 1,000,000 m².
Metric prefixes affect both dimensions. A kilometre is 1,000 metres, so a square kilometre contains 1,000², or one million, square metres.
Square Feet, Inches, and Yards
The converter uses the international inch, foot, yard, and mile.
One square inch equals exactly 0.00064516 m².
One square foot equals exactly 0.09290304 m².
One square yard contains exactly nine square feet and equals 0.83612736 m².
Square feet are common in property and floor-area descriptions, while square yards appear in flooring, landscaping, and material estimates.
Acres
An acre is a land-area unit equal to exactly 43,560 international square feet.
Using the international foot, one acre equals exactly 4,046.8564224 m².
One square mile contains exactly 640 acres.
Acres are widely used for agriculture, forestry, property, development sites, and larger residential parcels.

Hectares
A hectare, symbol ha, equals exactly 10,000 m².
It can also be described as one square hectometre or a square measuring 100 metres on each side.
One hectare is approximately 2.4711 acres, while one acre is approximately 0.4047 hectare.
Hectares are widely used for agriculture, forestry, planning, land records, and environmental reporting in metric systems.
Square Kilometres and Square Miles
Square kilometres and square miles are used for large geographic areas.
One international square mile equals exactly 2,589,988.110336 m², or 2.589988110336 km².
One square kilometre is approximately 0.3861 square mile.
Reported geographic areas can still differ because of boundary definitions, coastline measurement, map projection, and data-source methodology.
International Foot Versus U.S. Survey Foot
The United States discontinued the U.S. survey foot as a national measurement standard at the end of 2022.
This converter uses the international foot of exactly 0.3048 metre for square feet, acres, and square miles.
Older survey records, coordinate systems, maps, and engineering data may still contain legacy U.S. survey-foot-based areas.
Do not silently substitute these factors in legal surveying or historic geospatial work. Use the unit definition attached to the source dataset.
Area Units in Property, Construction, and Land Work
The numerical unit is only one part of an area measurement.
Property listings, floor plans, construction documents, and land records may use different rules for walls, balconies, shared spaces, staircases, voids, garages, and outbuildings.
A mathematically correct unit conversion does not resolve differences between gross, net, usable, internal, surveyed, or legally recorded area.

Decimal and Fractional Land Areas
Acres are often written as decimal values or common fractions such as one-quarter acre and one-half acre.
Convert a fraction to a decimal before entering it: ¼ acre is 0.25 acre, ½ acre is 0.5 acre, and ¾ acre is 0.75 acre.
Decimal hectares work the same way. For example, 0.5 hectare equals 5,000 m².
Area Conversion Versus Area Calculation
This converter requires a known area value.
To calculate a rectangle, multiply length by width using compatible units.
Circles, triangles, irregular boundaries, curved surfaces, and mapped parcels require their own formulas or measurement methods before the result can be converted.
Precision and Rounding
The underlying conversion factors remain unrounded during calculation.
Ordinary results display up to four decimal places, while very large or small values may use scientific notation.
Avoid presenting more precision than the source measurement supports.
A rounded room dimension, property listing, map boundary, or survey observation can carry more uncertainty than the unit conversion itself.
Privacy and Local Processing
The area conversion runs entirely in the browser.
Entered values and selected units are not uploaded, added to a public URL, or permanently stored.
Clipboard access is requested only when the result copy control is used.

It uses the international foot of exactly 0.3048 metre. Legacy survey datasets may use the slightly different former U.S. survey foot.
Can this calculate a room's area from length and width?
No. Calculate the area first by multiplying compatible length and width measurements, then convert that result here.
Can I use this result as a legal property measurement?
A conversion can restate a supplied area, but it cannot verify parcel boundaries, survey accuracy, legal records, or property-area definitions.
Can I enter scientific notation?
Yes. Values such as 2.5e6 and 1e-4 are supported.
