Area Converter: Square Feet, Acres, Hectares & More

Convert common land, floor, and surface-area units through square metres with exact linear-unit relationships and clearly labelled results.

Why area factors are squared

Area measures a two-dimensional surface. Because one foot equals 0.3048 metre, one square foot equals 0.3048 squared, or exactly 0.09290304 square metre.

The same rule applies to square inches, yards, kilometres, and miles. Acres and hectares are separately defined land-area units.

Land and floor-area units

Hectares are common in metric land measurement and equal 10,000 square metres. Acres are common in US and UK land descriptions and equal exactly 4,046.8564224 square metres.

1 ft2=(0.3048 m)2=0.09290304 m21\text{ ft}^2=(0.3048\text{ m})^2=0.09290304\text{ m}^2
1 ha=10000 m21\text{ ha}=10000\text{ m}^2
1 ac=4046.8564224 m21\text{ ac}=4046.8564224\text{ m}^2

Frequently Asked Questions

How many square feet are in a square metre?

One square metre is approximately 10.76391 square feet.

How many acres are in a hectare?

One hectare is approximately 2.47105 acres.

Why not use the ordinary length factor?

Area spans two dimensions, so the length conversion factor must be squared.
