You can enter ordinary decimals or common fractions such as 1/4, 1/2, ¼, ½, and ¾. This is useful for land areas such as a quarter acre or half acre.

One acre contains exactly 43,560 square feet. To convert square feet to acres, divide the number of square feet by 43,560.

For example, 10,890 ft² equals exactly 0.25 acre, 21,780 ft² equals 0.5 acre, and 43,560 ft² equals exactly 1 acre.

This relationship is especially useful for large commercial sites, warehouses, developments, farms, and land parcels that are listed in square feet but easier to compare in acres.

Large property and development areas are sometimes reported in millions of square feet. The same 43,560 ft²-per-acre relationship applies regardless of the size of the property.

One million square feet is approximately 22.9568 acres. Ten million square feet is approximately 229.5684 acres, and 100 million square feet is approximately 2,295.6841 acres.

One international square foot equals exactly 0.09290304 square metre. One square metre is therefore approximately 10.7639 square feet.

Square metres and square feet are common for homes, offices, rooms, warehouses, floor plans, and construction projects. A correct unit conversion does not determine which floor-area standard was used in the original measurement.

One hectare equals exactly 10,000 square metres. One international-foot-based acre equals exactly 4,046.8564224 square metres.

That makes one acre exactly 0.40468564224 hectare and one hectare approximately 2.4711 acres.

Acres are common in land and property measurement in several countries, while hectares are widely used in metric agriculture, forestry, land management, and planning.

Fractions of an acre often appear in residential property, agriculture, gardens, and development sites.

Because the converter accepts fractions directly, you can enter values such as ¼ acre or 1/2 acre instead of calculating the decimal first.

Area by itself does not determine the dimensions of a shape. A 10,000 ft² rectangle could be 100 ft by 100 ft, 50 ft by 200 ft, or many other combinations.

If you specifically assume the area is a perfect square, each side is the square root of the area and the perimeter is four times that side length.

The converter shows this square-only interpretation automatically so you can get useful dimensional context without implying that it represents the real parcel or room shape.

10,890 square feet is exactly one-quarter acre, but that area does not have one unique length and width.

If 10,890 ft² were a perfect square, each side would be approximately 104.355 feet and the perimeter would be approximately 417.421 feet.

A real quarter-acre lot can have very different dimensions depending on its shape and boundaries.

A hectare is an area, so there is no single perimeter for one hectare or any other hectare value unless the shape is known.

If one hectare is assumed to be a square, its area is 10,000 m², each side is 100 m, and its perimeter is 400 m.

Likewise, 0.25 hectare equals 2,500 m². If it were square, each side would be 50 m and the perimeter would be 200 m.

Square kilometres and square miles are generally used for much larger geographic areas than square metres, square feet, acres, or hectares.

One square kilometre contains exactly 1,000,000 square metres. One international square mile equals exactly 640 acres and 2.589988110336 square kilometres.

Mapped geographic areas may still differ between sources because of boundary definitions, map projections, coastline treatment, and measurement methodology.

Area has two dimensions, so a linear conversion factor must be applied twice.

For example, one foot equals exactly 0.3048 metre. A square foot therefore equals 0.3048 × 0.3048 square metre, which is exactly 0.09290304 m².

This is why converting metres directly to feet uses a different numerical factor from converting square metres to square feet.

Metres measure length, while square metres measure area. They cannot be converted directly into each other without additional information about the shape or dimensions.

For the same reason, an input such as 2,500 metres cannot be converted to acres. If the intended value is 2,500 square metres, that area is approximately 0.6178 acre.

This converter uses the foot defined as exactly 0.3048 metre for square feet, acres, and square miles.

The former U.S. survey foot was retired for normal use at the end of 2022 and is retained mainly for historic and legacy applications.

Older surveying, mapping, and coordinate data may still identify a legacy survey-foot definition, so professional geospatial work should preserve the unit definition supplied with the source data.

Converting an area unit does not verify what was included in the original property figure.

Floor-area measurements can use different rules for walls, balconies, garages, staircases, shared spaces, voids, and other features. Land records also depend on surveyed boundaries rather than unit conversion alone.
