How to Use the Tip Calculator
Enter the bill amount, choose or type a tip percentage, and set the number of people sharing the bill.
The result updates automatically. For one person, the main result is the total after tip. For a group, the main result becomes the total each person pays when the bill is split equally.
The percentage buttons are shortcuts only. You can type another percentage directly into the field whenever you need a custom value.
How to Calculate a Tip
A tip is calculated as a percentage of the bill amount. Multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100.
For example, a 20% tip on a bill of 100 is 20. Add that tip to the original bill and the final total becomes 120.
Another quick method is to convert the percentage to a decimal. For 18%, multiply the bill by 0.18. For 25%, multiply by 0.25.
| Tip | Tip multiplier | Tip on 100 | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10% | 0.10 | 10 | 110 |
| 15% | 0.15 | 15 | 115 |
| 18% | 0.18 | 18 | 118 |
| 20% | 0.20 | 20 | 120 |
| 25% | 0.25 | 25 | 125 |
How to Split a Bill With Tip
When everyone is paying an equal share, first calculate the bill plus tip and then divide that total by the number of people.
For example, a bill of 100 with a 20% tip becomes 120. Split between four people, each person pays 30.
The calculator also divides the tip itself. In that example, the total tip is 20, so each of the four people contributes 5 toward the tip.
| People | Total per person | Tip per person |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 120.00 | 20.00 |
| 2 | 60.00 | 10.00 |
| 3 | 40.00 | 6.67 |
| 4 | 30.00 | 5.00 |
| 5 | 24.00 | 4.00 |
| 6 | 20.00 | 3.33 |
Tip Per Person vs Total Per Person
Tip per person is only each person's share of the gratuity. Total per person includes both that person's share of the bill and their share of the tip.
If a 120 total consists of a 100 bill and a 20 tip, split between four people, the total per person is 30 while the tip per person is 5.
Keeping those two numbers separate is useful when a group wants to see how much of each person's payment is going toward the tip.
Using a Custom Tip Percentage
You are not limited to the preset percentages. Enter any supported percentage directly into the Tip percentage field.
Decimal percentages work as well. A 12.5% tip on 80 is 10, producing a final total of 90.
A 0% tip is also valid and leaves the final total equal to the original bill amount.
Should the Tip Be Calculated Before or After Tax?
The calculator applies the percentage to the exact bill amount you enter. It does not automatically identify or remove tax.
If you want the tip calculated from a pre-tax subtotal, enter the pre-tax amount. If you want to calculate from the amount after tax, enter that amount instead.
Which amount is used can depend on local practice, the business, or personal preference, so the calculator leaves that choice to you.
Tip vs Service Charge
A service charge, gratuity, or similar fee may already appear on a receipt. Before adding another tip, check the bill to see what has already been included.
This calculator does not inspect or interpret a receipt automatically. Enter the amount you actually want to use as the base for the tip calculation.
If a service charge is already included, whether an additional tip is appropriate depends on the venue, location, and circumstances.
Currency and Rounding
The calculator is currency-neutral. A bill of 100 can represent dollars, pounds, euros, rupees, or another currency. All monetary values in one calculation should use the same currency.
Displayed monetary results are rounded to two decimal places. The underlying calculation uses the full numerical result before display rounding.
When a total cannot be divided evenly to the smallest currency unit, the displayed per-person amounts can differ slightly from an exact real-world split. A group may need to adjust one person's payment by the smallest available unit.
Tipping Practices Vary
There is no single tip percentage that applies everywhere. Tipping customs vary by country, type of service, venue, and situation.
The preset percentages in this calculator are provided for quick arithmetic, not as a recommendation or rule.
Use the percentage that is appropriate for the service and circumstances where you are paying.
Common Tip Calculation Mistakes
Using the wrong base amount: The percentage is applied to whatever bill value you enter, so decide whether you are using a subtotal or a tax-inclusive total.
Confusing the tip with the final total: A 20% tip on 100 is 20, while the amount paid after adding the tip is 120.
Dividing only the bill: When splitting equally, divide the complete amount including the tip if everyone is sharing both.
Forgetting an included service charge: Check the receipt before adding another gratuity.
Mixing currencies: Bill and tip amounts in one calculation should all use the same currency.
How This Tip Calculator Works
The calculator multiplies the entered bill by the tip percentage divided by 100 to find the tip amount.
It adds the tip to the bill to find the final total. When more than one person is entered, both the total and the tip are divided by the number of people.
The calculations use the entered numerical values directly. Currency symbols, exchange rates, tax rules, and service-charge rules are not applied automatically.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100. A 20% tip on 100 is 20.
How do I calculate a 10% tip?
Multiply the bill by 0.10. A 10% tip on 60 is 6.
How do I calculate a 15% tip?
Multiply the bill by 0.15. A 15% tip on 80 is 12.
How do I calculate an 18% tip?
Multiply the bill by 0.18. An 18% tip on 50 is 9.
How do I calculate a 20% tip?
Multiply the bill by 0.20. A 20% tip on 100 is 20.
How do I calculate the total with tip?
Add the calculated tip to the original bill. A 100 bill with a 20 tip has a final total of 120.
How do I split a bill with tip?
Calculate the total after tip, then divide that amount by the number of people sharing the bill.
How do I calculate tip per person?
Divide the total tip by the number of people. A 24 tip split between six people is 4 per person.
Can I enter a custom tip percentage?
Yes. Type a custom percentage directly into the Tip percentage field. The preset buttons are only shortcuts.
Can I enter a decimal tip percentage?
Yes. Values such as 12.5% or 17.5% are supported.
Can I calculate a 0% tip?
Yes. A 0% tip leaves the final bill unchanged.
Can I use this as a split bill calculator?
Yes. Enter the number of people and the calculator divides both the total bill and total tip equally.
Can everyone pay a different amount?
No. This calculator currently assumes an equal split between everyone entered.
Should I calculate the tip before or after tax?
The calculator uses whichever bill amount you enter. Enter the pre-tax subtotal or the after-tax amount according to the convention you want to follow.
What if a service charge is already included?
Check the receipt before adding another tip. The calculator does not automatically detect service charges or included gratuities.
Why can the split be off by a cent?
Some totals cannot be divided evenly to two decimal places. The calculator uses the full numerical values internally, while displayed amounts are rounded.
What currency does the calculator use?
It is currency-neutral. You can use any currency as long as all monetary values in the calculation use the same currency.
Does the calculator convert currencies?
No. It performs the tip and bill-split calculation only and does not use exchange rates.
Is there one correct tip percentage?
No. Tipping practices vary by country, type of service, venue, and situation. The calculator lets you choose the percentage rather than prescribing one.
