A foot is a unit of length in the imperial and United States customary systems. Its standard symbol is ft. One international foot is exactly 0.3048 metres, or 304.8 millimetres.

Units called a foot appeared in many historical measurement systems and did not all have the same length. Body-based names were practical before reproducible national and international standards became available.

The international foot is now used in customary-unit contexts such as height, room and building dimensions, shorter distances, elevation, and aviation altitude.

In 1959, English-speaking nations aligned their yard and pound standards. The international yard was fixed at exactly 0.9144 metres.

Because one foot is one-third of a yard, the international foot became exactly 0.3048 metres. Because one inch is one thirty-sixth of a yard, the international inch became exactly 25.4 millimetres.

This metric foundation is why the modern feet-to-inches relationship is stable and exact even though feet and inches are non-SI units.

The former U.S. survey foot was slightly longer and was retained for some historical surveying and mapping work after the international foot was adopted. NIST and the National Geodetic Survey retired it at the beginning of 2023, except for historical and legacy applications.

The difference is negligible for ordinary household lengths but can matter across large legacy coordinate systems. Values explicitly identified as U.S. survey feet should be handled with a specialised survey-unit conversion rather than this everyday converter.

A decimal foot value uses a base-ten fraction of one foot. Digits after the decimal point do not represent inches directly.

For example, 5.5 feet means 5 feet plus half a foot. Half of 12 inches is 6 inches, so 5.5 feet equals 5 feet 6 inches, or 66 total inches.

By contrast, 5 feet 5 inches equals 65 total inches. Confusing decimal feet with mixed feet-and-inches notation creates a one-inch error in this example.

Multiply each foot value by 12 to obtain total inches. Quarter-foot values convert neatly because one quarter of 12 inches is 3 inches.

When the inch value is not a multiple of 12, the result can be a decimal. For example, 18 inches equals 1.5 feet.

Total inches are convenient when a form, spreadsheet, drawing, comparison, or calculation needs one unit instead of separate feet and inches.

Decimal feet are useful in workflows where lengths are stored and calculated as a single numeric value. Mixed feet-and-inches notation is often easier to read for everyday dimensions.

Always keep the unit with the number. A bare result such as 72 is ambiguous unless the surrounding context already establishes inches.

The unit relationship is exact, but the converter displays a maximum of three decimal places for a clean practical result.

A repeating value such as 1 inch divided by 12 is shown as 0.083 feet. That displayed value is rounded; it is not an exact replacement for the repeating decimal.

The quality of the converted result cannot exceed the quality of the source measurement. An estimated or rounded input remains estimated or rounded after conversion.
