What a Coffee Ratio Means

A coffee ratio written as 1:16 means one gram of ground coffee for every 16 grams of brewing water.

Thirty grams of coffee at 1:16 therefore requires 480 grams of water.

The ratio scales without changing when the batch becomes larger or smaller.

Calculating a Batch From Servings

Serving mode multiplies the number of servings by the entered brewing water per serving.

The resulting total water is divided by the selected ratio to calculate the required coffee.

Coffee cups and mugs do not have one universal volume, so enter the actual amount you intend to brew per person.

Water Grams and Millilitres

The calculator uses the practical brewing approximation that one gram of water occupies about one millilitre.

Actual water density changes slightly with temperature, but the approximation is suitable for ordinary coffee recipe planning.

US fluid ounces and cups are calculated from the approximate millilitre result.

Brewing Water Is Not Beverage Yield

The result shows water poured into or added to the brewer.

Coffee grounds retain part of that water, and some liquid may remain inside the brewer or filter.

The final beverage therefore normally weighs less than the total brewing-water input.

Adjusting the Ratio

Using less water for the same coffee dose creates a more concentrated recipe. Using more water creates a less concentrated recipe.

Taste is also affected by grind size, brewing time, water temperature, water chemistry, agitation, roast, and brewer design.

Not necessarily. This calculator uses the US customary cup of approximately 236.588 millilitres. Coffee makers may label a smaller volume as one cup.

Does the water result equal the coffee I will drink?

No. Coffee grounds and the brewer retain some water, so final beverage yield is normally lower.

Can I calculate cold-brew concentrate?
