The presets are planning assumptions rather than guarantees for every individual fish or variety.

Aquarium capacity alone does not describe the complete habitat. Two tanks holding the same volume can provide different swimming length, width, surface area, and oxygen exchange.

The RSPCA notes that wider aquariums provide more surface area than tall narrow tanks of similar volume, which supports better oxygen exchange.

Substrate, decorations, equipment, and the unfilled space at the top reduce the amount of water below the advertised empty-tank capacity.

Use the closest practical estimate of actual water volume when comparing an existing aquarium.

A tank can exceed both displayed volume references and still have unsafe water conditions.

Biological filtration supports bacteria that convert toxic ammonia into nitrite and then into less toxic nitrate.

The RSPCA and OATA guidance state that ammonia and nitrite should test at zero. Water testing, filter maintenance, partial water changes, oxygen exchange, and gradual stocking remain essential.

A larger filter cannot replace missing swimming space or suitable aquarium dimensions.

A current tank below the higher reference deserves reassessment before more fish are added.

A tank at or above both displayed references has passed only those two volume comparisons.
